Gary The Grub

This is the first installment of “Gary the Grub meets Zoot the Suit” created and illustrated by Ethan Wenberg.

Artificial Intelligence seems to be taking over everywhere these days, but did we ever expect it to be in a pair of trousers? Well, for one who has to squirm around like ol’ Gary the Grub, this could finally be the edge he needs to get ahead in this world. Well his world at least. You see , the world he lives in is filled with a menagerie of insect characters featuring many legged appendages. The level of craw envy must be in overabundance.

Everyone needs a boost when they are just slugging around in life crawling low in the muck. Gary however will have to decide if he likes this new life-change metamorphosis technology is giving him. Will he adapt well to a new life in the fast lane? Perhaps…. or maybe he’ll reminisce about his cozy hole in the ground with a recliner and a couch and a remote control.

Grubby is as grubby does….

Zonk comics!

Variety is the spice of life. So why not drop a few characters here that have been cooking in the comics kitchen.

Starting off we have “Gary the Grub” issue one. In this episode, we are introduced to Gary and his apartment life at the root of a tree. He realizes the futility of being a lowly grub worm in a world populated by insects of many legs. He reckons to make it in that world, you have to have an edge. An upgrade to his life is well in order.

Soon arrives a mysterious gift. A pair of robot legs sent from an unknown source. Will this new contraption evolve his life and his character forever? Stay tooned…

Zonk issue one is still in print. Perhaps a Zonk issue two is on the horizon. As a teaser for that bit of information, here is a preview for “Sammy Squirrel: Mall Cop!”

Finally for anyone interested in the ever weird and compelling canine tales of a flea bitten superhero….”The Spaniel” makes an appearance in the new series of “Captain Fantastico” issue #1.

On sale now! Only from Zonk Comics.

Nose Clown

This episode, Spaniel helps take a bite out of crime. Sometimes he has to take out the trash in the back alley of his privately owned dive bar “The Dog House”. Too much drama in the L.B.C., it gets hard being a d o g. He has his suspicions but perhaps this form of criminal clowning is a syndrome befalling those who partake of too many party favors.

Gary the Grub

Back in the years of my high school days I was the cartoonist for my school newspaper “The Hawkeye.” I had created a monthly comic strip in it titled “Gary the Grub.”
I recently found this old strip episode of “Gary the Grub” lying around in my stash of older drawings. I decided to do an upgrade to the look of the strip with modern digital inking and coloring. The soul of the art is still there, only with a clearer execution. One thing I struggled with on working on this is the extreme detail that I used to put in my art. Truly the sign of a daydreaming teenager who would rather escape into his art world than focus on the important schoolwork at hand. At least journalism class and my art class gave me a good outlet for the worlds I sought to escape to in my sketchbook. Mathematics not so much.
